Look at the services, hours, area covered and prices on each listing, and meet the provider before you decide. Ask about training, experience and how they handle emergencies. For childcare and elderly care, ask whether staff have background checks and whether the service is registered with the local authority where that applies.

Agree the duties, hours, pay, days off and notice period in writing. Ask for references and contact them. For care services, agree how you will be kept informed and what happens if the carer is ill. Keep copies of any identity and registration documents you are shown.
